Code of Conduct

community guidelines

The thoughts and views of guests, event attendees, speakers and Podcast guests do not represent the views or beliefs of Mythicist Milwaukee. We do, however, expect our community to follow some straightforward guidelines that will continue to promote MM's goal of creating a peaceful, respectful community.

We have chosen to follow the industry best-practice guidelines regarding hate speech from Google:

"We encourage free speech and try to defend your right to express unpopular points of view, but we don't permit hate speech. Hate speech refers to content that promotes violence or hatred against individuals or groups based on certain attributes, such as:

  • race or ethnic origin
  • religion
  • disability
  • gender
  • age
  • veteran status
  • sexual orientation/gender identity

There is a fine line between what is and what is not considered to be hate speech. For instance, it is generally okay to criticize a nation-state, but not okay to post malicious hateful comments about a group of people solely based on their ethnicity."

Mythicist Milwaukee is an educational organization. As part of our educational mission, we hold regular meetings and conferences. To ensure that everyone attending our conferences is able to participate fully in them, Mythicist Milwaukee and its members prohibit intimidating, threatening, or harassing conduct during our conferences and meetings. This policy applies to speakers, staff, volunteers, and attendees. Prohibited conduct includes, but is not limited to, yelling at or threatening speakers or attendees. Prohibited conduct includes, but is not limited to, harassment based on race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or any other protected group status, as provided by local, state, or federal law. By way of example, abusive conduct directed at someone because of their race is prohibited. Prohibited conduct includes, but is not limited to, sexual harassment. By way of example, unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of an unwelcome sexual nature are prohibited. In general, prohibited conduct includes any abusive conduct that has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with another person’s ability to enjoy and participate in the conferences and meetings. Critical examination of beliefs does not, by itself, constitute harassment. Mythicist Milwaukee has a zero-tolerance policy for hostile and harassing conduct. If a person engages in hostile or harassing conduct, appropriate remedial action will be taken, which may include, but is not limited to, expulsion from the conferences and meetings. Hostile behavior or threats of hostile conduct that are made prior to a conference may result in exclusion from the conferences and meetings. Persons who are the targets of, or witnesses to, hostile or harassing conduct should contact conference/meeting staff (who will wear identification). Reports of hostile or harassing conduct will be promptly addressed.
